Beta Handheld scanning

Scan stock in and out from a phone or handheld

OpenBoxes Lift Mobile opens in Chrome on your phone or handheld scanner, at your own OpenBoxes address. Look up stock, receive shipments and pick and ship requests by scanning barcodes, working directly in your own OpenBoxes.

Who has it

Every Shared, Dedicated and Enterprise instance, with all three workflows on. There is nothing to install from a store and nothing to turn on: it is on by default, and your account owner or an Admin can turn Look up, Receive or Pick and ship off for your site in the portal, under Devices & sensors.

What it costs

Included on every plan at no extra charge during the beta. The handheld beta works the same on every plan: on Shared, on Dedicated, and on Enterprise, which runs on Dedicated, Look up, receiving, picking and shipping are all in beta.

Dedicated and Enterprise

The same app and the same three workflows as Shared, in beta: scan or type a code, look up stock offline once the app has synced its product list, receive shipments line by line, pick and send requests, and sign in with your OpenBoxes password or through the portal.

Three things it does

Each worker signs in with their own OpenBoxes account and sees what their role allows.

Look up

Scan a barcode to see what it is and where the stock is.

Receive

Receive an inbound shipment that is already in OpenBoxes, line by line. Each line is saved to OpenBoxes when you tap Save line, and the stock is added when you complete the receipt.

Pick and ship

Pick a request bin by bin, then tap Send. Stock leaves your location only at Send. The pick list is made on the desktop first, and where your location uses packing, sending stays on the desktop.

Not in this beta: offline saving (saving needs a connection), label printing, cycle counts and putaway. It is a web app you open from your own address, not an app from a store.

Devices and scanners

It is built for Chrome on Android phones and handhelds, including Zebra mobile computers. Set a scanner that types like a keyboard to send Enter after each scan, which is how the app knows a scan has ended. The setup guide has the DataWedge settings for Zebra devices. Camera scanning needs a browser that can read barcodes, and never works on an iPhone.

Nothing about it is validated or certified by Zebra or any other device maker.

Getting started

  1. On the device, open https://<your-subdomain>.openboxes.cloud/handheld/ in Chrome.
  2. On Android, add it to your home screen from Chrome's menu. It appears as Lift Mobile.
  3. Sign in with your OpenBoxes username or email and password, or tap Sign in through the portal.
  4. Set your scanner to send Enter after each scan, and check it in the app's Scanner test.

The beta terms

  • Corrections are made by your own team, on the desktop. If something is saved wrong, your team corrects it in OpenBoxes on the desktop.
  • A send moves stock. On every plan, sending a request from the handheld moves that stock out of your location, and the shipment.shipped webhook fires. On every plan, completing a receipt adds the stock it received. If the shipment is for a purchase order, the order.received webhook fires once the order is fully received. Your stock alerts see either change at the next daily check.
  • Worker names appear in your Platform Log. Each sign-in to Lift Mobile is recorded in the Platform Log on your Instance page with the worker's name and username. On Dedicated, sign-ins through the portal are recorded by username.
  • We may turn it off while we fix a problem. During the beta we may turn picking, saving or the whole app off if we find a problem, and turn it back on once it is fixed. OpenBoxes on the desktop keeps working as usual. If we pause it for your site, we email your account owner and Admins when we do and when it is back on.

Something not working? Open Diagnostics in the app, tap Copy for support and paste the report into the support chat in your portal. The report leaves out names, ids and barcode contents.

Questions about handheld scanning

What is OpenBoxes Lift Mobile?

Our handheld scanning app, in beta. It is a web app that opens in Chrome on a phone or handheld scanner at your own instance address followed by /handheld/, so there is nothing to install from an app store.

Which plans have it, and what does it cost?

The beta works the same on Shared, Dedicated and Enterprise, with Look up, Receive and Pick and ship all on by default. It is included on every plan at no extra charge during the beta, and there is nothing to buy or turn on.

Does it work offline?

Saving needs a connection on every plan: nothing is saved offline. On every plan, Look up keeps working offline once the app has synced its product list.

Which devices is it built for?

Chrome on Android phones and handhelds, including Zebra mobile computers. Camera scanning needs a browser that can read barcodes and never works on an iPhone. It is not validated or certified by Zebra or any other device maker.

What does it not do?

It does not print labels, do cycle counts or putaway, or save offline. Changing a quantity already saved, clearing a pick list and substituting a product stay on the desktop.

Is the capability you need in here?

Ask about any feature: lot tracking, integrations, mobile, reporting. If we don't do something you need, we want to hear that too.
